About the show

When Venetian Duke, Antonio, lends his friend Bassanio 3,000 ducats to help him woo the woman he wants to marry, he doesn’t dream he will end up having to repay his debt with his own flesh. But, when he takes out a loan with Jewish moneylender Shylock, that is exactly the bond he is asked to promise.

As Antonio’s ability to pay back his debt is hampered, Venetian society holds its breath to see how far Shylock will really go to see the bond fulfilled. Will he really demand his pound of flesh?

In Shakespeare’s dark comedy the value of a promise is stretched to its limit in a society of endless masks, directed by James Yeatman.
