Alumni news: May edition

While we may not be able to visit theatres at the moment, there are still plenty of opportunities to catch the work of our alumni. Whether they are starring in the latest TV drama, performing monologues for charity or directing short films on YouTube, here are just a few highlights.  

What’s new this month 

• Anna Maxwell Martin stars in new comedy Code 404, now airing on Sky One. 

• President of LAMDA and graduate Benedict Cumberbatch stars in Frankenstein alongside fellow alum Daniel Millar, streaming until 8 May via National Theatre at Home. 

• Julie Hesmondhalgh has joined the cast of The A Word, alongside fellow alum Lee Ingleby. Tune into the third series from Tuesday 5 May on BBC One. Read Julie’s interview with The Guardian here.  

• National Theatre at Home will be streaming Anthony and Cleopatra from 7 to 14 May, featuring Shazia Nicholls. 

• LAMDA exams alum Neil Gaiman will be taking part in The Big Book Weekend which runs from 8 – 10 May as part of BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine.   

• Angus Imrie stars in short film The Good Book now available to stream on Slung Low theatre company’s website.  

• MA Directing graduates Sibylla Archdale Kalid and Júlia Levai have both directed films for The Virtual Collaborators project. Watch Sibylla’s Winners and Inside and Júlia’s In the Mourning on YouTube.  

• Cast members Esh Alladi, Frances Grey, Lisa Kerr, Rory Kinnear and Stuart Thompson and directors Ned Bennett and Tinuke Craig are all part of Unprecedented: Real Time Theatre From a State of Isolation, streaming online this month.  

• Paterson Joseph will feature in the line-up of ‘Readings from the Rose’ which can be accessed by anyone completely free of charge on the Rose’s YouTube and Instagram channels. 

• David Suchet, Julie Hesmondhalgh and current student Oliver Maynard are all taking part in The Sonnet Project for Jermyn Street Theatre. 

• The recent Almeida Theatre production of Albion will be on BBC iPlayer later this month as part of 'Culture in Quarantine', starring alumni Victoria Hamilton and Donal Finn, with movement direction from Directing graduate Rebecca Frecknall.

• James Harkness stars in BBC drama The Nest. Catch up on the full series on iPlayer.  

•  Former classmates Stacy Keach and Swoosie Kurtz are reunited in Man with a Plan, now airing on E4. 

• Watch the 2017 Young Vic production of Yerma now available on Drama Online for which Graeme Pugh was Production Sound Engineer.   

• Maria Colette Bukley was Assistant Stage Manager for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Young Vic in 2017 which is also now available on Drama Online.    

• MA Directing graduate Polly Findlay’s productions of Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice are available on BBC iPlayer as part of their 'Culture in Quarantine' programme. You can also see Natalie Simpson as Ophelia in Hamlet.   

• Current final year student Mia Stubbings is prop maker for Private Peaceful at Nottingham Playhouse, rescheduled for Spring 2021.  

• Listen to audiobook In At The Deep End, narrated by 2019 graduate Ell Potter, available on BBC Radio 4.    

• Listen to Richard Armitage narrate new audiobook His & Hers, released on Amazon on 28 May.

Latest news 

• Harriet Walter will perform Soldiering On as part of Alan Bennett’s monologue collection, Talking Heads airing on BBC One in the coming months. Director of LAMDA Sarah Frankcom will also direct Maxine Peake in the monologue Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet.  

• Katherine Parkinson starring in Shoe Lady will broadcast in June as part of Lockdown Theatre Festival on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4.
