About the show

Based on an epic ancient tale from Cornwall, Tristan & Yseult revels in forbidden desires, broken hearts, grand passions, and tender truths. 

Emma Rice is the Artistic Director of her new company, Wise Children.

She adapted and directs the company’s forthcoming Bagdad Cafe, and previous productions Angela Carter’s Wise Children (The Old Vic/UK tour) and Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers (Bristol Passenger Shed/UK tour). For the ENO she directed Orpheus in the Underworld.

As Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe (2016–18), she directed Romantics Anonymous, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Little Matchgirl (and Other Happier Tales). For the previous 20 years, she worked for Kneehigh as an actor, director and Artistic Director.

Her productions for Kneehigh include: The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, Tristan & Yseult, 946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, The Wild Bride, The Red Shoes, The Wooden Frock, The Bacchae, Cymbeline (in association with RSC), A Matter of Life and Death (in association with the National Theatre), Rapunzel (in association with Battersea Arts Centre); Brief Encounter (in association with David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers Productions); Don John (in association with the RSC and Bristol Old Vic); Wah! Wah! Girls (in association with Sadler’s Wells and Theatre Royal Stratford East for World Stages); and Steptoe and Son.

Notable engagements elsewhere: the West End production of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Oedipussy (Spymonkey); The Empress (RSC); and An Audience with Meow Meow (Berkeley Repertory Theatre).

Carl Grose’s plays include Grand GuignolSuperstition MountainGargantuaHorse Piss For Blood, 49 Donkeys Hanged and The Kneebone Cadillac.

For the past twenty-five years he has worked with the internationally acclaimed theatre company, Kneehigh, as actor and writer. Writing for Kneehigh includes Tristan & YseultThe Bacchae, Blast!, Cymbeline, Hansel & Gretel, The Wild Bride, Dead Dog In A Suitcase (and other love songs)The Tin Drum and most recently, UBU! a singalong satire.

Carl is also co-artistic director of Kneehigh alongside its founder, Mike Shepherd. Other writing includes The Dark Philosophers and Never Try This At Home for Told By An Idiot, Oedipussy (Spymonkey), Wormy Close (Soho Theatre), Faust (Vesturport/Young Vic), The 13 Midnight Challenges of Angelus Diablo (RSC at Latitude) and The Hartlepool Monkey (Gyre and Gimble).

He is currently writing a play for the RSC and several new shows for Kneehigh, including a musical about America’s first (and only) blind five year old phone hacker, Joybubbles

Anna Maria Murphy is a former member of Kneehigh Theatre, latterly as a writer, (Tristan and Ysuelt, with Carl Grose, & Red Shoes, Don John, The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings), including BBC Radio 4, plays and short stories.

For Kneehigh she was lead artist on Kneehigh’s Rambles programme & Coastal Communities project Random Acts of Art.

Matt Wilde is the Course Leader of the MFA Acting & MA Directing courses at LAMDA and is an award winning Theatre & Film Director.

In his current position, he directs and teaches across a range of LAMDA’s acting programmes. Public productions directed include King Charles III and our Graduating Actors Showcase.

Matt has worked professionally as an Actor and Director nationally and internationally. He has directed at some of the UK’s leading theatres including the Royal Court London, National Theatre London, Almeida, Old Vic, Soho, Unicorn Theatre, Liverpool Everyman, Edinburgh Traverse and for leading companies including National Theatre, KSF, Out of Joint, Actors Touring Company, Old Vic New Voices, Middle Eastern Theatre Academy and Splendid Productions. His work has taken him to NYC: Broadway, UAE, Europe, Brazil and Mexico. Matt is also a former Associate Director of the National Theatre Studio and Out of Joint Theatre Company.
 
Matt studied and trained as an actor and director at Bretton Hall: University of Leeds, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and on programmes with the Arts Council of England. He has and continues to be involved in developing and producing new work with writers from a variety of venues, programmes and communities. He has worked on new work with writers including Roy Williams, Sabrina Mahfouz, Greg Burke, Hassan Abdulrazzak, David Hare and Adam Rapp. Education and actor training is at the core of his endeavours and he has worked extensively in the UK’s leading Drama Schools and institutions including LAMDA, LIPA, RADA, Rose Bruford and Goldsmiths University. Most recently he created and was the Course Leader for the MA Acting (Company) Course at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). 
 
Matt’s debut feature film Kicking Off won BEST UK FEATURE FILM at London’s Raindance Film Festival in 2015 and BEST PRODUCTION & BEST UK FEATURE FILM at Oxford International Film Festival 2016 and toured international film festivals.
